Kentucky Life

Kentucky Life: Eastern Kentucky native Gary Akers has devoted his life to his art. Choosing to work in the difficult medium of egg tempera--which requires the painstaking application of hundreds of layers of the egg-based paint--Akers produces works lauded for their richness of detail and beautiful subject matter. Sharing his time between his Northern Kentucky home and a summer home on an island off the coast of Maine. In this profile, the artist demonstrates a little of his technique and talks about where his ideas come from. We also meet his daughter, Ashley, who has “graduated” from occasional subject of her dad’s paintings to become an artist in her own right. No eggs here, though: Ashley’s growing reputation is being made in watercolors.
